Depending on the type of childcare business you would like to start in Omaha, there are two different pathways:

• Register and consult with Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative (NECC), utilizing their resources for in-home daycare, defined as (Family 1 & Family 2)

  OR

• Navigate the path using the State of Nebraska system to start a center-based location

Consult the following guidance specific to the kind of childcare business you plan to operate:

• In-home Daycare Center

  • Connect with NECC early, utilize their Toolkit,

  • Consult NECC to help navigate regulations for in-home “Family 1 or Family 2” models

• Center-based location

• Utilize the resources available through the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services

Align with City of Omaha Regulations

• Planning/Zoning Department

  • Ensure your home is zoned correctly and safe to operate an in-home daycare by calling the Planning Help Desk (402-444-5150 x2063)

• Fire Marshall/Certificate of Occupancy

  • Part of your licensure from the State of Nebraska will require an inspection from the Fire Marshall. Create a profile on Accela to apply for a Certificate of Occupancy/schedule an inspection.

• Attain commercial auto insurance and/or additional personal injury or umbrella insurance

• Enroll with the State’s Step Up to Quality Program, get a ranking, and enroll as a provider

• Consider getting a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA)
